IN Cell Analyzer - Installation Guidance

General Installation Instructions

  1. Download the version and style needed for your instrument. Cytiva recommends using the latest version, unless an older version is needed for pre-existing experiments.
  2. Quit INCell software before beginning the installation.
  3. Run the installation program to install software on both the workstation and the instrument. Skip the instrument control software installation if only the Simulator is needed.
  4. For sites that need to run multiple versions of software, install the newest version last. The instrument should always be running the newest version of the instrument control software.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the Standard and Desktop Installers?

The Standard installer adds items to the Start Menu and distributes files to the common locations used by Microsoft Windows. The Desktop installer copies all files to a folder on the user's Desktop. Every user can have a different copy of the Desktop software, whereas the Standard version is shared amongst all users.

Which type of installation should be used, Standard or Desktop?

The Standard installation is good for normal situations and can serve as the official installation. The Desktop installation has a variety of purposes, including:

To run the Desktop version, navigate to the appropriate folder on the desktop and then double-click on the Analyzer program. For convenience, create a short-cut to the application.

Can more than one version be run from the same workstation?

Yes. A workstation can have both Standard and Desktop installations at the same time. In addition, every user can have a personally configured copy of the Desktop software, and multiple versions of the Desktop software are possible on the same workstation. Only one version of the Standard software is allowed, because the program files are shared within common folders.

Can more than one copy of the software run at the same time?

No, running more than one copy of the software at the same time would be complicated and would reduce system reliability.

Can the software be installed on a personal computer?

Yes. The software contains an instrument Simulator that allows it to operate without a real instrument. When only the Simulator is needed, skip the installation step that involves the instrument control software (the last step). Cytiva offers the Simulator as a convenience to users who wish to review images on a separate computer. Naturally, the computer must meet the minimum requirements. Cytiva does not officially support the Simulator, and therefore cannot promise that the software will run without any issues.

Does the software require licenses?

The basic GUI and Simulator do not require a license. Only the additional features like plate heating, liquid handling, and 3D Deconvolution require licenses.

Do I need to install a specific version of Java?

No, the INCell package includes its own copy of the Java Virtual Machine (JVM). INCell will only use the JVM that is included within the designated sub-folder of the INCell software.

Are there any compatibility issues to consider?

The instrument control software is designed to be backwards compatible with older versions of the INCell acquisition GUI. The opposite is not true, however. Older versions of the instrument control software will not necessarily support newer versions of the GUI. To avoid issues, always use the newest possible version of the instrument control software. The instrument control software can be re-installed by navigating to the appropriate folder and then launching the program called "INCellICServerInstaller.exe".

Does the installer automatically check whether the package contains a newer version than the existing software?

No. The INCell installer is designed to overwrite the existing software regardless of version. Installing an older version of software on top of a newer version is allowed. This direct approach has many advantages.

Where are the release notes?

Release notes for the present and previous versions of software are installed in the "manual" sub-folder of the INCell program folder.

Trouble Shooting

The installer and GUI won't run after a recent installation.

The Java support files may have been corrupted during installation. This issue can occur when the INCell software is running during the installation procedure. To correct the problem, it may be necessary to manually delete Java files within the INCell program folder. The uninstaller will not work for the same reason that the installer doesn't work.

The "wrong" version of software is presented in the "About" dialog.

Check that the desired version of software is actually being launched. The Windows Start Menu will always point to the most recently installed version of the Standard package. Short-cuts on the desktop or toolbar may point to unexpected locations.

The GUI reports that the instrument control software or firmware needs to be updated.

This can happen if an older version of the instrument control software is installed after a newer version of the GUI software is installed. To correct the problem, follow the upgrade procedures provided in the warning message. If necessary, the underlying firmware installers can be found in the INCell program folder.
