Help Conventions

The following conventions are used in online Help:

Typography

This Typeface

Indicates

Boldface

Names of buttons, menus, menu commands, options, and fields.

Initial Capitals

Names of windows, dialog boxes, and tabs.

Italics

Names of products, programs, or documents.

ALL CAPITAL LETTERS

Names of keys on the keyboard such as ENTER or DELETE.

Uniform space text

File and directory names. This also indicates text that is to be entered into a field or on a command line.

 

Lists and Notes

  1. Numbered items are sequential steps in a procedure.

Note indicates information about the previous paragraph or step in a procedure.

Important indicates important information about the previous paragraph or step in a procedure.

CAUTION indicates important information regarding potential damage to equipment or software.

WARNING indicates important information regarding potential personal injury.

Tip indicates helpful advice.

Mouse Terms

Term

Means

Pointer

 

The icon that indicates the mouse position on the screen. It is usually a small black arrow, but changes shape to show what effect using it will have. For example, the pointer turns into a small, circle-shaped icon in the Image window to indicate that clicking a spot will center it.

Point to

Use the mouse to move the pointer to a position on the screen. For example, point to the File menu, means to move the mouse pointer to the File menu.

Mouse button

The left mouse button, unless specifically stated otherwise. For actions that require the middle or right mouse button, the mouse button is specified. For example, using the middle-mouse button, drag the graph to rotate it.

Click

Press the left mouse button and quickly release it. Click refers to the left mouse button unless indicated otherwise.

Double-click

Press the left mouse button and release it two times in quick succession.

Right-click

Press the right mouse button and quickly release it.

Drag

 

Move an object on the screen to a new position by pointing to the object, holding down the left mouse button while moving the mouse pointer, and releasing the button when the pointer is at the new position.
