Measure Distance Settings

Use the Measure Distances menu to measure the distance between two or more points in the Image window.

Tip You can measure the distance between bright and dim spots in a region of the image by using Search For with Box and Range.

Open Measure Distances by choosing Tools | Measure Distances from the Image window.

Use

To...

Window

Specify the window number of the Image window for which you want to measure distances. If you are working with multiple Image windows and want to change the window number, you can type the new window number into the Window field or use the mouse to drag the window number in the Image window to the Window field.

Measure Method

Choose how you want the distance between two points to be measured:

Standard Two Point measures the distance between two points. Measurement starts over after the second point.

Single Reference measures distances from a single reference point. When you choose Single Reference, the first point you click in the Image window serves as the reference point. The distance between this reference point and subsequent points you click is displayed in Measure Distances.

Leap Frog is similar to Standard Two Point, except that the end point of each measurement serves as the start point of the subsequent measurement.

Multiple Segment measures the distance between a series of points. You can scroll through the list of measurements in the display pane near the bottom of the Measure Distances dialog box. To view the total distance between the first and last point, click Get Distance.

Units

Choose the units for the distance measurements. The options are Pixels, Nanometers, Micrometers, or Millimeters.

Subpixel Resolution

When this check box is inactive, measurements are made from pixel to pixel (always from the lower-left corner of the pixel). When the Subpixel Resolution check box is activated, measurements can be made from any point inside of a pixel to any point inside of another pixel.

Draw Lines

Display a line in the Image window that connects the points that you are measuring.

Search For

Specify how points are selected when you click on the image with the mouse.

Minimum:  softWoRx finds the minimum intensity within a region around the point that you click. (This region is defined by Box and Range). The coordinates of that intensity are the point coordinates.

Maximum: softWoRx finds the maximum intensity within a region around the point that you click. The coordinates of that intensity are the point coordinates.

Nearest: The point that you click is selected.

Box and Range

Specify the region to be searched.

Box (the field on the left) defines the dimensions of a square that bounds the region to be searched. The region is searched for either the dimmest or brightest pixel, depending on whether you choose Minimum or Maximum in Search For. The value in Box is the length of a side of the square in pixels.

Range (the field on the right) defines the maximum distance (from the start point) to search for bright or dim spots.

Last Point

Display the coordinates of the point that you most recently clicked in the Image window.

Next Point

Replace a previously used point number (if the method is Multiple Segment) by typing a number in Next Point or clicking an arrow button. Each point that you click in the Image window is assigned a number. The Method option determines the point number of the point that you click.

Total Points

Show the total number of points that are selected for the current group.

Delete Group

Delete all of the currently selected points.

Delete Last

Delete the last point.

Get Distance

Display the total length of segments joining the first and last points (if the Method is Multiple Segments).

Save Options...

Open the Distance Save Options dialog box that allows you to choose options and save measurement data to a text file.

Done

Close Measure Distances.
