To set a grayscale colormap:

Grayscale mode displays each wavelength of the image in 256 shades of gray. The minimum intensity is displayed as black and the maximum intensity is displayed as white. Grayscale colormaps map colors to grayscale images. Choosing a new colormap changes the color lookup table for images that are opened after the colormap is changed. (Colormap selections apply only to the session in which they are made. Subsequent softWoRx sessions use the default colormap.)

  1. From the Image window menu, choose View | Select Image Colors.

  2. In the Color Display Mode drop-down list, choose Grayscale.

  3. Click Modify Grayscale Map to open the Select Image Colormap window.

  4. To force data values of zero to always be displayed in black, select Zero always Black.

  5. In the Current Colormap list, choose a colormap.

  6. To modify the colormap, click and drag the mouse cursor across the color bar at the top of the window. (The image that is displayed in the Image window changes as you change the colormap.) Then save the modified version in the .swcolormaps file in your home directory.

  7. Click Done in the Select Image colormap window and then click Done in the Select Image Colors window.

Notes

  • When the Select Image Colormap utility is started, the .swcolormaps file overrides colormaps that exist with the same name in the PSEUDO_COLORMAPS configuration file.)

  • Single-channel images are normally displayed with the default Grayscale colormap, which consists of 256 color cells that are set to a linear gradient from black to white. The Scale Image tool manages how the data intensity values (8-bit, 16-bit, or floating-point) are mapped to these 256 colors.
