Customizing System and User Parameters

You can set several parameters that affect how softWoRx functions. These variables can be set as global system parameters that apply to the whole system or as local user parameters that apply only to a single user. For example, the system administrator may set the system-wide default Working Set to 120Mb, but an individual user may need to raise this number temporarily to accommodate a large data set.

To set user parameters:

  1. Choose Utilities | User Parameters from the main menu to open the User Parameters dialog box.

  2. Enter or modify the Value fields for the parameters that you want to change.

Tip To find out more about a parameter, click on its label.

  3. Click Save to save the new configuration.

  4. Restart softWoRx.

These modifications apply only to the user account that you are using to run softWoRx. The new values override values in the system-wide defaults file. The changes are saved in the .swrc file in your home directory.

Notes

  • A button with the label "-----" in an option menu indicates that the variable has no current value set for it.

  • The Save button updates the .swrc file or system .swrc file. A backup copy of the file is made before it is updated.

  • The Revert button resets all values back to the last-saved settings.

To set system parameters:

  1. Choose Utilities | System Parameters from the main menu and enter the root password for the workstation.

  2. Enter or modify the Value fields for the parameters that you want to change.

  3. Click Save to save the new configuration.

  4. Restart softWoRx.

The new values are the default values for all users (unless specifically overridden by a user). They apply only to users who don't have a value set for the same variable in the .swrc file of their home directories. These parameters are saved in the system.swrc file in the /usr/local/softWoRx/config/ directory.
