Choosing Between the Standard and Desktop Installers

The Standard installation is good for normal situations and can serve as the official installation. The Desktop installation has a variety of purposes, including:

• - evaluating new versions of software
• - supporting long-term experiments that are already in progress
• - personalizing configuration settings for specific applications
• - isolating and protecting specific configurations

The Standard installer adds items to the Start Menu and distributes files to the common locations used by Microsoft Windows. The Desktop installer copies all files to a single folder on the user's Desktop. Every user can have a different copy of the Desktop software, whereas the Standard version is shared amongst all users.
